Wandsworth Fringe Tap Dance Days (Day Five): Film as a Visual score for Improvised Music

  • National Opera Studio 2 Chapel Yard London, England, SW18 4HZ United Kingdom (map)

Tap dancer Petra Haller is joined by some of London's finest improvising musicians to create a live musical landscape inspired by experimental film. Come and see top tier artists create in real time.

Tap dancer Petra Haller was introduced to experimental film making during the pandemic, when due to not being able to leave the house or perform, her iPhone camera and laptop became the only creative outlet and way to artistically express herself.

After her first short-film ‘depth perception’ which was streamed at an online ‘Tate Lates’ exhibition she delved further into the medium and studied with Monika Kita.

Inspired by her experience in multimedia performance and improvised music, Haller decided to create an experimental film for the Wandsworth Fringe Tap dance days, to be used as a graphic score for herself and a group of improvising musicians.

Graphic scores serve a dual purpose: they look beautiful and also explain abstract ideas as to how the music has to be played, but leave enough freedom to be taken on a new journey each time the piece is performed.
